I Love God. But Why Do I Keep Backsliding? Ask Pastor Chris Oyakilome

Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans in the seventh chapter from verse fourteen to fifteen (Rom.7.1415) said: “We know that the law is spiritual, but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”

QUESTION: “I Love God. But Why Do I Keep Backsliding?”

A young man named……. From south asked a simple a straightforward question saying (transcript): “Pastor, I love God. But why do I keep Backsliding“.

Now let’s roll into the answer drawn from wisdom that the man of God gave to this question.

ANSWER: Your Heart Is Set On Something Apart From The Lord

Pastor Chris Oyakilome [TRANSCRIPT]: Well, that’s a genuine concern. There may be many reasons why you keep backsliding. Probably, you’re concerned about things outside what the will of God is for your life.

Then he further shared an escape route for anyone who is going this situation:

Set Your Heart On The Lord

The first thing you need to do to stop Backsliding is to set your heart on the Lord. Give Him your attention. He said: “my son give me your heart and let your eyes observe my ways“.

I want to read something to you from Saint Mark’s gospel, chapter four. when you study the verses from one to twenty (Mark.4:1-20), he tells us about a man who went forth to sow. A sower that went forth to sow.

He says as the man sows, some seeds fell at the wayside and they told us the meaning of that. Some fell on hard ground—stony ground, and he told us the meaning of that.

Then the third group he said: “the seeds fell among thorns“… and I want to read that to you.

Mark.4.7 – And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.

The seeds yielded no fruit because when they grew up, the thorns choked them.

From verse eighteen (Mark.4:18)… Jesus explained this parable to His disciples. But I will begin with verse fourteen (Mark.4:14) so you’ll understand.

Mark.4.14 – The sower soweth the word.

So the seed is the word.

Mark.4.15 – And these are they by the wayside, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

That’s for those that fell by the wayside. They don’t even understand the word… And the word didn’t have time to grow. So Satan came immediately and stole the word from their hearts.

But then we go to verse eighteen (Mark.4:18):

Mark.4.18 – And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,

Mark.4.19 – And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

So there is a reason why the word of God that has come into you; instead of producing results and keeping you in the way is not happening. It’s because you are receiving the word among thoughts. You’re allowing other things. Look at the names he calls them: “the cares of this world“, “the deceitfulness of riches“, “and the lusts of other things (Mark.4:19)”. All these choke the word in your life… And that’s why you keep Backsliding.

You have things that are choking the word of God that has been sown in your heart.

You can deal with these things. Jesus showed us that it’s our responsibility in Saint Luke’s gospel chapter twenty-one, from verse thirty-four (Luke.21:34)

Luke.21.34 – And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

So you are the one to take charge of your heart. He said: “lest at any time your hearts become overcharged“. So it’s with surfeiting, drunkenness, and cares of the life. He does not want your heart to go after anything outside of the Lord.

So, it’s up to you! The Bible says: “guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it springs issues of life (Prov.4:23)”. This is your responsibility. You are the one to stop yourself from Backsliding.

The Bible says: “be steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the works of the Lord. For as much as you see, you know that your labor in on to Him (1.Cor.15:58)”.

So He says here Luke.21:34)

Like.21:34 – “And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.”

Luke.21.35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

Conclusion – Why Do I Keep Backsliding?

So, take heed! Because the Lord is coming again and He wants us to be steadfast, to be grounded in the word of God. That’s important!
